The Settlement
Aqora is a settlement in the California city of Los Angeles. It’s one of the longest-standing strongholds and also one of the most self-sustaining, with a small number of city blocks that surround the Los Angeles Library boxed in by thick metal and concrete walls that have been slowly built up over the past two years. It’s mostly safe and definitely fortified with posts for lookouts, shops and restaurants converted into living spaces and cooking spaces, apartment buildings cleared out, old dirt soccer fields converted for farming, and basement parking structures blocked off.
You don't want to go into the basement parking structures.
How things work
Essentially things will work as a small town without a money system: things are all bartered and the more valuable something is, the more you can get for it. Medical care will be provided no matter what using what few supplies there are, but the less things are in stock the more likely it is that you'll just get bandaged up and you'll be hoping for the best. Surgery supplies are low at best and, well, you only have one doctor (so far). Take care of him.
Surrounding areas
All right. Okay. Well. As far as anyone knows, everything outside the walls is fucked. Dead everywhere, supplies cleared out, so on. There are whispers of other settlements, but are they to be believed? Well, no one's ever found them, so that's up to you.
Communication
Someone (a brainiac, gross) has managed to set up a rudimentary network using the nearest cell phone towers. Using whatever cell phones are sturdy enough these days, people can communicate with others in Aqora via text or audio only. Anything further out - say, on a supply run - has to be via voice on a walkie. Further than that, you're on your own.
